March Wrap-Up: Books, Films, and Thoughts
Part 1: The Book I Read – Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg
I have read 10 chapters of this book, but it seems that I haven’t gained much from it. What I took away is that injustices still exist, and gender equality remains a goal that women continue to strive for. The obstacles come from long-standing societal biases, the lack of women in senior leadership positions, and deeply ingrained beliefs that hold women back from stepping out of their comfort zones and pursuing their ambitions for power.
Part 2: The Show I Watched – True Beauty (2020)
The drama I want to talk about is True Beauty (2020). It tells the story of a high school girl named Lim Ju Kyung, who is bullied by a group of classmates for being considered unattractive.
Her family consists of her father, mother, older sister, and younger brother. After her father suffered a huge financial loss from a failed investment, they had to sell their house and move back to their old home. Her father became a stay-at-home dad, her mother worked as an eyebrow tattoo artist, her sister joined an entertainment company, and her younger brother was still in school.
After the family crisis, Ju Kyung was transferred to a new school, far away from her bullies. There, she learned makeup skills and transformed herself into a beautiful girl through her own talent. Throughout her journey, Ju Kyung faced many challenges but always found a way to overcome them. She was fortunate to have a caring homeroom teacher and kind classmates at her new school.
For me, this drama is a heartwarming and healing experience.
And through this show, the main cast caught my attention because they are so beautiful. But what impressed me even more was their academic background in real life.
Both Moon Ga Young (the female lead in this show) and Cha Eun Woo were excellent students in school. They have been friends since university. Moon Ga Young even published a book called Pata, and she can speak German and English as well as play the piano. Cha Eun Woo’s highest rank in school was 3rd in the entire student body, and he is also an idol—a member of the group Astro. On top of that, he can play the piano.
They are truly all-rounded individuals! They have both beauty and brains. I hope their personalities are just as excellent too! It would make them even more admirable and inspiring.
